Gingivitis is a condition that, left untreated, can lead to gum disease. It is an inflammation of the gums from plaque buildup on the teeth and often results in red, swollen, and tender gums, and it can eventually cause bone loss and tooth decay.

Periodontitis (Gum Disease)

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums and surrounding tissue. It is the major cause of about 70 percent of adult tooth loss, affecting three out of four persons at some point in the life, and if untreated, is characterized by bone loss and tooth mobility. In order to stabilize the disease and prevent further damage, a deep cleaning of the area below the gumline (the space between the tooth and gums) is often recommended and should be followed by routine and regular dental cleanings.
